RFID and NFC chips

Technology description

Briefly about RFID:

The RFID technology is nowadays understood in two different points of view. The first one is used for quite some time - RFID cards for attendance systems.

These cards are very reliable, because their reading is contacless, usually from a distance of 5 cm. Therefore there's usually no necessity to take card out of the bag, just place it near the reading zone.

Advantage of such a solution is constantly decreasing price of the technology - reading devices (starting at 3000 CZK without VAT) and cards as well. Here the price depends on the quality and type of the card. Price starts at 50 CZK without VAT per card.

A new way of using RFID, which "golden age" is starting, is using it for identification in stores. This way barcodes should be replaced. A cashier won't have to "beep" every item, but we'll just come to a cash desk and pay.

Now let's get back to the detail definition of RFID:

RFID uses radio communication to exchange information between an infomation holder (so-called TAG) and a computer. A typical RFID system consists of TAG containing stored data, an antenna for communication with TAG and a controller ensuring communication between antenna and PC.

An information holder (TAG) is usually attached to a packet, vehicle or to a product itself a stores information in a memory chip. This TAG travels with the product. Information holder (TAG) RFID TAG consists of a coil, a memory semiconductor and if a system is active a battery as well.

TAGs are manufactured in various sizes, capacities, ranges and temperature intervals. TAGs can be so small, they may be implanted to animals and in the contrary so large to cover an entire table. Almost every TAG is resistant to shocks, chemicals, dirt and humidity. While they are almost completely resistant to outside influence, their reading/writing range can be affected while in vicinity of iron or electromagnetic radiation.

TAGs can be charged from an internal battery (active TAGs) or from an energy from the antenna (passive TAGs). Passive TAGs almost don't require service and have theoretically infinite operating life. Active TAGs are limited by a battery life, that's why some TAGs are offered with exchangeable or high-capacity bateries.

Label

Labels are placed on printed, stroken or in a different way manufactured RF coils on a paper/polyester substratum with a memory chip. Although their resistance to outside influence is not as high as it is in case of TAGs, labels offer a lower price and are ideal for dispensable applications.

A label travels with a product through an entire manufacturing process and transportation. When a customer buys it, it just drops of the system in contrary of a reused TAG. Therefore a label is used mainly in batch production.
